Neuropsychological Testing

neurological testing

Neuropsychological testing is a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning to assess brain function and identify potential impairments associated with neurological conditions, psychiatric disorders, or brain injuries. The testing assesses a wide range of brain-related abilities, deficits, and dysfunction through the administration of standardized tests, interviews, and observations. These evaluations provide an understanding of an individual’s neuropsychological strengths, weaknesses, or impairments, aid in the diagnosis of underlying neuropsychological conditions, and offer tailored recommendations for intervention and support. Neuropsychological testing is utilized in diagnosing various conditions, including traumatic brain injuries, dementia, ADHD, learning disabilities, schizophrenia, and stroke-related cognitive impairments. .

When is Neuropsychological Testing Needed

Neuropsychological testing is recommended when there are concerns about cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning that may be related to brain dysfunction. At ABS, we recommend neuropsychological testing for a variety of situations.

Medical and Neurological Conditions

·  Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): assess cognitive deficits after a concussion or more severe brain injury.

·  Stroke: evaluation of cognitive and language impairments post-stroke.

·  Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disorders: differentiates between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and conditions like Alzheimer’s.

Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders

·  ADHD and Learning Disabilities: diagnosis and guide interventions for attention and processing difficulties as well as executive functioning.

·  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): assess cognitive, social, and executive functioning.

·  Mood and Anxiety Disorders: utilized when cognitive dysfunction (e.g., memory difficulties in depression) is suspected.

·  Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders: evaluates cognitive deficits often associated with these conditions.

Workman’s Compensation Cases

·  Personal and/or Work Injury Cases: determine cognitive impairment following an accident.

Through neuropsychological testing we can determine the presence, nature and severity of impairment in cognitive or other neuropsychological functioning, and what treatment will address the deficits.  The results can help guide diagnosis, treatment planning, and accommodations for individuals experiencing cognitive challenges.
